What Is Chunkability? Writing Content AI Can Extract
A 'chunk' is a self-contained answer an AI can lift from your page without surrounding context. Chunkability is one of the most underrated AEO skills — here's how to write for it.
Answer engines don't read your page top to bottom the way a human does. They retrieve at the passage level — pulling out small, self-contained units of information and assembling an answer from several sources. A "chunk" is one of those units: a heading plus a few sentences that fully answer one specific question on their own.
Chunkability is how easily an AI can extract a clean, standalone answer from your content. It's one of the most underrated and least-explained concepts in AEO — and most businesses have zero awareness of it.
The cover-up test
Here's the fastest way to test it: cover up everything on the page except one section. Does that section give a complete, useful answer by itself? If yes, it's chunkable. If the answer only makes sense after reading three paragraphs above it, an AI engine will struggle to use it — and will look elsewhere.
What kills chunkability
- Buried answers — the actual answer arrives in paragraph seven, after a story about your founding.
- Context dependence — a section that only makes sense if you've read the one before it.
- Vague headings — "Our approach" tells an engine nothing; "How long does onboarding take?" tells it exactly what the chunk answers.
- Wall-of-text prose — long flowing paragraphs with no clear unit boundaries.
How to write chunkable content
- Make each heading a real question a buyer would ask.
- Answer it directly in the first one or two sentences — lead with the conclusion.
- Keep each section self-contained: no "as mentioned above."
- Add the supporting detail after the answer, not before it.
