AEO vs. SEO: What's the Difference (and Do You Still Need SEO)?

AEO optimizes to be the answer an AI engine gives; SEO optimizes to rank a link. Here's how they differ, where they overlap, and how to invest in both as a solo founder.

AEO and SEO are cousins, not rivals. SEO is about ranking a link on a results page; AEO is about being the answer an AI engine gives directly. Both still matter — but the balance is shifting, and where you spend your limited hours matters more than ever as a solo operator.

The core difference

Traditional search returns a list and lets the human choose. The buyer sees ten links, forms an impression of the landscape, and clicks. Answer engines do the choosing: they read the sources and return a recommendation, frequently naming only two or three options. Ranking #4 on Google still gets you clicks. Being the AI's fourth-favorite gets you nothing — it usually only names the top few.

Where they overlap

Most of the fundamentals serve both. Clear, well-organized pages that genuinely answer a question rank in classic search and get extracted by answer engines. Structured data helps Google understand your page and helps AI engines pull clean facts. Third-party citations build the authority both systems lean on.

  • Shared wins — useful content, fast clean pages, schema markup, real third-party mentions, a clear category.
  • SEO-specific — keyword targeting, backlink volume, ranking for high-traffic terms, technical crawlability at scale.
  • AEO-specific — short quotable answers up front, FAQ-style Q&A that mirrors how people ask AI, being unambiguously the named option for a niche question.

So do you still need SEO?

Yes — for now. Plenty of buyers still use classic search, and ranking pages are often the very sources AI engines cite. Think of AEO as the new layer on top: keep your SEO foundation healthy, then optimize specifically for being named in the answer. The two reinforce each other.
